2 important notes:

1. These 3 reviews were written earlier in the year as I was trying to find my voice and review style. So they are going to be a bit lacking and filled with quotes, which is why I combined them in one post. On a positive note, I have taken major strides in my growth as a reviewer in the past year!

2. “The Story so far” is possibly the best thing ever! I’m glad that Mark Lawrence utilizes this, and I wish every author would follow.

Red Sister

MY RATING: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“I am a weapon in service to the Ark. Those who come against me will know despair.”

Mark Lawrence is a fantastic writer, and Red Sister continues that trend. Red Sister is a coming of age story that nearly all takes place at the Convent of Sweet Mercy. It will keep you on your toes wanting more and more as you get to know Nona and the other girls story.
This book is also FILLED TO THE BRIM with amazing quotes. The most important one within the story, has a lot of meaning outside the story in real life and as a book lover, it just might be my favorite quote ever.

“A book is as dangerous as any journey you might take. The person who closes the back may not be the same one that opened the front one. Treat books with respect.“

Grey Sister

MY RATING: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“In service to the ancestor, death is but a kiss.”

Grey Sister picks up 2 years after the events of Red Sister. The POV has shifted to multiple, giving Abbess Glass, Zole and Sister Kettle bigger roles, while Nona, now 15, is still the main POV.
The introduction of Keot makes Nona’s character development so much more interesting than it already was. Dealing with the Tacsis, the Noi-Guin, Sherzal, and now an enemy within.

“In any game of bets and forfeit the bluff was always of more importance than whatever might be written on the cards held tight against your chest.”

The first part of the book takes place at Sweet Mercy and the second takes place outside. The addition of other POV’s gives way to development of side characters and their intentions. Abbess Glass may be my favorite of these. The conclusion will have you reeling for more as it is filled with tense and emotional moments leading to a great finish and lead up to book 3.

“In the end it is not whether we live or die here, but how the message echoes through the empire and beyond.“

Holy Sister

MY RATING: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Incredible way to finish this series, it was like a flaw blade to the heart!

I just want to start out by saying, WOW, that death scene near the end!! OMG!!!
This was a fantastic trilogy, quite possibly the best I’ve read from Mark Lawrence so far, and Nona’s character development is so amazing, seeing her as a wild child about to be hanged for murder in book 1 to where she ends up is incredible.

“The fight matters. But in the end it is never truly won or lost, and a victory lies in discovering that we are bigger than it is.”

Holy sister takes place three years after the events of book 2, unlike books 1 & 2, we get flashback chapters that fill us in on events that happened directly after the end of Grey Sister.

“There might not be a meaning to the world, or in it, but that does not mean that what we do has no meaning. Also, because I didn’t mention it in other reviews,
