BOOK DESCRIPTION

Am I making it worse? I think I’m making it worse.

Following the events in Network Effect, the Barish-Estranza corporation has sent rescue ships to a newly-colonized planet in peril, as well as additional SecUnits. But if there’s an ethical corporation out there, Murderbot has yet to find it, and if Barish-Estranza can’t have the planet, they’re sure as hell not leaving without something. If that something just happens to be an entire colony of humans, well, a free workforce is a decent runner-up prize.

But there’s something wrong with Murderbot; it isn’t running within normal operational parameters. ART’s crew and the humans from Preservation are doing everything they can to protect the colonists, but with Barish-Estranza’s SecUnit-heavy persuasion teams, they’re going to have to hope Murderbot figures out what’s wrong with itself, and fast!

Yeah, this plan is… not going to work.

MY REVIEW

I typically do the kindle whispersync with this series, but I decided to go a different route this time around with the graphic audio version. It took some getting used to not hearing Kevin Free’s narration, which if I’m honest, I may still prefer over this slew of narrators. That’s not to take anything away from them as they all performed very well, so I definitely still give props to David Cui Cui, Debi Tinsley, Elena Anderson, Bradley Foster Smith, Christopher Walker, Eric Messner, Eva Wilhelm, Karen Novack, Ken Jackson, Khaya Fraites, Laura C. Harris, Lydia Kraniotis, Nanette Savard, Richard Rohan, Scott McCormick, Stewart Crank, Thomas Penny, Triya Leong, Yasmin Tuazon and Zeke Alton, for the work that they put in.

7 books in and not a single one has really blown me away with anything, though I do feel like they’ve gotten better as the series goes on, aside from Network Effect, this one feels a bit like a step back after Fugitive Telemetry’s step forward, which this takes place directly after NE. I won’t say that I didn’t enjoy it, because it’s hard not to enjoy Murderbot and all his snarkiness, and the relationship with ART, which is always fun to see. While this is bigger than the other novellas, it’s still 100 shorter than NE, both of the biggest in the series are my lowest rated. Maybe that could be because what makes the novellas so special and what captured the hearts of fans was the fast paced and action packed part of the stories that felt like they flew, while the two novel sized stories show more of what Wells can do as an author by more building on the world and with Murderbot.

The final part of this really saved it for me though. I was looking at a 3.75-4.0 with this until I got to the last hour and a half, where I feel like it really ramped up and had me focusing hard to see what was going to happen. Overall, this was a good addition to the story, and im still very interested to see what Wells has in store for Murderbot and ART in the future.
