MY REVIEW
I loved the first book in this series so much that I was actually a bit worried on how Dinniman could step it up. I should not have been because this was more phenomenal than book one. It took what was fun and chaotic raised it to another level so I definitely won’t be questioning that again. Where Dinniman gets his inspiration and twists it with his own imagination is inspiring and what makes this work so well.
I said that DCC was described as Hunger Games meets Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, but to me it felt more like Borderlands meets Free Guy with the Fallout skill tree along with some Zombieland (kill of the week) and even a bit of The Fifth Element added to the mix in my first review. But now I have to add Westworld and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest as other inspirations for this story. Westworld comes from how the NPC’s and visitors are and how they have “protection.” There’s a part in the story that reminded me of Will Turner’s dad who was “part of the ship, part of the crew”.
Carl and Princess Donut’s adventures get even more bizarre the further they go into the dungeon. Now we get to see a nightmarish metropolis called The Over City, a safe place in the day time and a scary place when the sun goes down. The funny upgrades that Carl has to deal with along with Donut’s impulsive behavior and not to mention Mongo who helps take the chaos to another level. There’s just so much to love about Carl’s Doomsday Scenario.
I’m gonna keep this part short and sweet because I’ve already said what I needed to say in my review of book one and everyone else has also said this as well. The narration by Jeff Hays is just phenomenal, he takes what Dinniman makes great and puts it into the stratosphere of phenomenal. It’s hard to compliment any further without sounding like a loon. Just read and listen to this, no excuses. Become one of us!
